Earlier versions of Windows required extra software or codecs. In Windows 7 the ability to play MP4 files is already part of the operating system.

That was what I was referring to. No VLC player or anything else required.

It's really shameful that it took this long for mediaplayer to support mp4 files. I don't see any point in limiting myself to what mickeysoft allows me to do. So I never use mediaplayer and always use VLC or mplayer. They are free and small enough to download even with dialup. And one doesn't need administrator privileges to install them; just unzip the files.

Very, very handy.

Microsoft has spent years trying to push its proprietary "wmv" format. It isn't their nature to accommodate a competing program.

I use both of them, but WMP only for audio, for video I always use VLC
